2021 Barolo Bussia Cicala (0,75L) - Conterno Aldo
De Barolo Cicala heeft een robijnrode kleur. In de complexe neus herkennen we vooral pruimen, bessen, likeur en een lichte houttoets. Zeer compacte en rijke wijn met stevige tannines. Zonder twijfel de meest krachtige van de 3 cru's, door de ligging van de wijngaard die jaarlijks garant staat voor wat extra zonuren. Deze wijn kan gerust nog wel wat extra flesrijping gebruiken.

"Another great Cicala. Moderately saturated red colour. Very strong presence of blood orange on the deep, perfumed nose, complicated by hints of watermelon and pomegranate. Very long, deep and complex on the rising, youthfully chewy finish. I find myself liking the wines of Cicala more and more in recent years (something that was almost never the case, and that goes for the wines of the 1980s and 1990s too); but today, this vineyard site is delivering some of Aldo Conterno’s most impressive wines already at a very young age. I may be totally wrong, but I think the older age of the vines in Cicala is now playing definitely in its favour compared to the still very good Barolo Colonnello, for example (30-40 years old vines for the latter versus 40-50 years of age for the Cicala). Use of the Rupestris du Lot rootstock in Cicala, a rootstock with a completely different geo-morphologic angle really allows the roots to dig deep, and that is undoubtedly aprt of the secret here (there’s no use for SO4 here when after the first meter and a half you still have to go down). It is also noteworthy and no doubt a contributor to this wine’s success that at Conterno they have subdivided the Cicala into six micro-areas, just like the Romirasco (Colonnelo only two because of lesser soil and topographical diversity) allowing them to better handle the viticultural needs of the site. Importantly, they only made 6000 bottles of the Barolo Cicala instead of the 23,000 they could make, which tells you a little about the quest for quality at Aldo Conterno. Well done. Drinking window: 2034-2050."

"The 2021 Barolo Cicala is packed with dark fruit, iron, gravel, incense, tobacco, dried herbs and chocolate. Time in the glass brings out a more mineral dimension, but the 2021 is a decidedly rich, ample Cicala. Even so, all the elements are very nicely balanced. I would give this a few years in bottle to come around."

Wijnhuis Conterno Aldo
Statisch en historisch familielandgoed in Monforte d'Alba, bezield door hun unieke terroir. Dat traditie niet ouderwets hoeft te zijn bewijzen de wijnen die vandaag tegelijk modern en klassiek zijn, loepzuiver en met een ongekende finesse.
Net buiten Monforte d’Alba, middenin het historische hart van de Bussia cru, ligt het statige landgoed Poderi Aldo Conterno, gesticht door de gelijknamige wijnmaker in 1969 en bezield door finesse. De boerderij 'Favot' lijkt wat op een historisch klooster en herbergt een traditionele kelder met meer Slavonische foeders dan moderne Franse barriques. Van deze laatsten zijn de Conterno's trouwens nooit grote fan geweest en ze worden ook nooit gebruikt voor de opvoeding van de Barolowijnen. Na het overlijden van Aldo in 2012 heeft het domein zichzelf moeten heruitvinden. De 3 zonen (Franco, Stefano en Giacomo) besloten onder andere om de opbrengsten in de wijngaard drastisch te verlagen en nog meer in te zetten op de identiteit van de diverse cru’s.
