Meningen over 2022 Barolo Villero (3,0L)

Michaela Morris, Decanter: 90

"Shy and hesitant, the aromas suggest mature fruit as hints of tea, liquorice and powdered brick slowly transpire. Sturdy in frame, the palate reveals dark, dried berries outlined by chewy, chalky tannins. An iron-inflected finish is consistent with this wine's savoury character. Perhaps another year in bottle will coax out more of its charms. From a southwest-facing 1.3-hectare plot, Villero is the estate's hottest site. It is always the first to be picked, on 20 September in 2022."

"Open and floral, showing roses, lilacs, lavender, dried flowers and red berries. Medium-bodied and elegant, with transparent fruit and plenty of clarity and vibrancy. Tannins add depth, complemented by focused acidity. Truly exceptional for the vintage. Accessible now with aeration, but will improve with a couple of years. Drink or hold."
