"Dense garnet in the glass, this sample shines for its depth and intensity, with rhubarb, bitter oranges, Mediterranean herbs, Parma violets and cinnamon. The attack is firm, dense and velvety, with a full body, great fruit concentration, graphite minerality and refreshing lifted acidity. It doesn’t come across as over-extracted despite the firm structure intended for the long haul. Best from 2027"

"Orange-red. Perfumed complex and spicy, with captivating aromas and flavours of red cherry, blueberry, sandalwood, marzipan and menthol. The finish is extremely long, textured and multilayered. Once again, Romirasco embodies the qualities of the other two famous Aldo Conterno Barolo crus. The 2020 Romirasco is broad like the Colonello, but with the leather-like notes and the power of the Cicala (Cicala and Romirasco are separated only by a very small stream, if you can even call it that). But currently the Romirasco’s tannins are more assertive and a little less polished than those of the Colonnello and the Cicala, though spending some time in the cellar will go a long way in making this the winner it almost always is. Still, I can’t help but wonder if, when comparing the three crus of the 2020 vintage ten-twenty years from now, the Colonello and especially the Cicala might not be looked at as the most successful of the these three cru wines, something that basically never happens (Romirasco always come out ahead, in practically every vintage: I for one cannot remember the last vintage I preferred either the Colonello or the Cicala more than a Romirasco of the same year). I might well be wrong and I really don’t know why it was that the wine is leaving me with this impression, but I can’t help but think that the higher soil clay and soil iron content of the Cicala cru really served it well in a warm year like 2020. Drinking window: 2034-2050."
